Places often no longer download as KML files

Android, Windows 10

e.g. https://www.inaturalist.org/places/geometry/204606.kml produces the attached error. This used to work seamlessly. Oddly, it will upload geojson versions which I can convert, but I’d love to have the old functionality.

it’s worth noting that it’s possible to generate a KML file for some places but not for others. i don’t see any obvious pattern related to which places work and which ones don’t. it doesn’t seem to be related to place type, size, complexity, multipolygons, name complexity, ancestry, etc…

Good to know - I tried a couple of others and none of them would work for me. Odd.

Not an insurmountable problem, but …

yes, i think most don’t work, but some do. for example:

I have never had trouble downloading KMLs from the edit window, but that’s only available to curators.

there is a link to download stuff from the edit window if you created a place, even if you’re not a curator. that link is effectively the same thing as navigating to the URLs we noted above. for me, it’s not consistently working. some places work, some don’t.

if you go to place 204606, are you actually able to download the KML via the edit screen link?

Hm I got the error too. Guess I haven’t downloaded enough KMLs that way to have a large enough sample.

I created 204606 and the Download KML in the edit place window doesn’t work for me either. I can normally download any place using the URL method.

I just tried to download two KMLs that I originally imported to iNat back in 2022, and I get the mole error for both as well

I can replicate, I’ve made an issue.

This has been fixed for all cases. I can download the KMLs in the links provided in this thread so it’s looking good to me.
