Plant with kidney shaped leaves in Veracruz, Mexico

My grandmother was given a plant from Veracruz, Mexico that had leaves shaped like kidneys. It is a vine that grows in the sand dunes of their beaches. Leaves are the size of quarters when the two kidneys are joined together. It is believed to have medicinal values for kidney health. They probably have non-serrated leaves and have a smoothish texture. The ivy stem is about the thickness of a female finger. That is all she remembers as she was young. Please help us identify this plant and any suggestions or tips are welcome. Thank you!

does it look like this?
