I didn’t realize you were the same age as me. I imagined you to be in your forties.
I would love for a true centurian to show up waving their arms and saying, ‘What about me?’
My grandmother, for whom I am named, lived to 102, which sounds old but at her funeral we referred to her “tragically young death” since her mother had lived to 107 or 108 (depending on records).
She was quite petite, which likely contributed to something she loathed: how she was infantilized in her old age by what she referred to as “the well-meaning but poorly raised”.
Rest assured, were Lucy The Original here, I would treat her just the same. She’d have it no other way.
I am at this group :)
I am at work, identifying observations at breaks (so, a kind of work, too).
And still unfamiliar with forum rules/guidelines ;)
Bartosz,
One best practice on this forum, in terms of communication and readability, is to quote the text that you’re replying to.
In your case, it might look like this:
If you click the post he was responding to (in the top right, where jnstuart’s profile pic is visible), you can see the context. No need to always rehash the whole conversation/quote when you’re replying directly to a comment, unless it would be unclear which part of their post you’re referring to.
I’m 16 years old and I joined the iNat forum Oct 23, 2024. I’m happy to be part of such a great community. Hopefully I’ve caused more good than harm on the forum lol.
I’m in my 40s no kids here, just cats and lots of time spent outside, so I guess not typical of most ppl in their 40s?
This really is one huge aspect I like about iNat. I feel like these places are exceedingly rare nowadays. The only two other places I can think of which are like this are public libraries and community orchestras.
It is considered rude to ask a woman’s age. I am definitely old enough that when people think i am 15 years younger i do not correct them.
When I was in college, the internet had just been invented. (It was ARPAnet when I was in high school.) I helped build an Altair 8800 in high school - when I was in college, IBM PCs were invented (and Commodore 64s). In grad school, Macs were invented, in my postdoc, we had Connection Machines. Things move fast.
ooh… I like these kinds of brags. We had a telephone party line till I was in middle school and phone numbers had 5 digits. I wore a gym suit in gym class and girls weren’t allowed to wear pants till my senior year and then it had to be a coordinated pant suit. Boys couldn’t wear their hair past their ears and girls’ skirt hems had to touch the floor if you were kneeling. (This was an ordinary public school - those rules were part of the times). Televisions didn’t have remotes and you couldn’t mute the commercials. Growing up, our town had three channels: NBC, CBS, and Public Television. I missed any show airing on ABC. I keenly remember the days JFK, MLK, and Bobby Kennedy died. But somehow I missed the moon landing. All I can figure is I was out cruising the gut with my girl group. We liked to hit up Pizza Hut which was a really cool place because it had black lights. Groovy.
I forgot about the telephone party lines. Looking back, we were barely above cave dwellers! ;-)
I had forgotten (repressed) that. Boy, those things were hideous, and only added to the humiliation of being bad at sports…
They also didn’t have color.
This was one of my questions, too. I think the age distribution is interesting and, in my mind, may show that people, from 20s thru 50s show more and more involvement in family and work (as we used to say, overwhelmed by life, while during their 60s many retire or start to realize that time is slipping by and return to their enjoyment in nature. Just a thought.
I joined when I was 13, now I’m 16 and I used seek from 11-13. One day when I look back at my childhood, I am going to say “Inaturalist was my primary source of entertainment and still is today.” Thank you staff, curators, moderators, and users just like me for making this COMMUNITY a source of joy for all ages. It’s not just the joy however, it’s the learning experience. This community has put me on a path of personal growth. I am outside more often, enjoying the small things that bring happiness. This is why I love Inaturalist so much, it’s a motivation to get out and hike that trail, kayak that lake, or simply go in your own backyard. So once again thank you everyone for making this possible!
Hi, I am currently 13 with 5400 observations. At first it was more like my dad’s account but it was due to my interest in wildlife and I was the one making the observations.
I intend to hang in there til then (15 years away)! And my aunt is in her 90s and contributing flora in MN. See you all then??
OMGosh! I didn’t realize other places “cruised the gut”!
The rest… all of it!!!
Over 200 voters now! Apparently, there’s a lot of 20 to 30 year olds on the forum.
