I’m told it’s best to post multiple images when submitting a species, but using the iPhone app, either within the app, or from the camera app, I don’t see how it is possible. When I search for advice, it doesn’t apply. Is it the app version that is the issue?

Hit the + button at the top left of the “New Observation” screen. It’s shown halfway through this video: Video tutorial: How to Make an Observation with the iNaturalist Mobile App
In the newer app, to upload an observation with multiple photos initially, I think you have to activate advanced settings in the settings section. That should allow you to upload many photos even for different observations and group them together as needed. Otherwise, you can edit previous observations and add photos after the fact.
