Proposal for a new filter option: the 'ID tips' button

A good idea, but in the mean time, there are projects:
Observations with ID Tips
Helpful ID Info

Now we jut need to find a way to merge those two projects. Or administrators of each should periodically gather all the observations added to the other.

Nice!
I’ll try to remember to put stuff there in future. And I’ll scrounge around in my brain for some tips that I remember having coming across recently, but failed to bookmark. And of course I’ll also try to remember to look there from time to time.
Hmmm … that’s gonna require a lot of remembering!

I just joined the project; looks like a couple of other people joined today, too.

And our dashboard’s dropdown menu has a direct link to our page(s) of favorites. If this was implemented, I could see clicking on the ā€œID tipsā€ icon creating a similar type of page, with a corresponding menu choice.

I’d know that username anywhere…

There is also this project to collect observations that contain ID tips

Thanks. Like others have said, it can definitely be tough to find projects. And sometimes even harder to remember they exist. Perhaps we could somehow merge the projects

Umbrella projects are an easy way to put observations from a group of related projects together.

I could see this being really helpful especially for taxa where there just aren’t a lot of guides out there, or at least not readily accessible to most people. For example, fish bones are a huge source of frustration for me, because as far as I’ve found in several months of research, there are hardly any online identification resources at all, and what there is is mostly reference photos that don’t tell you what to look for. The human element of observation comments could make things so much easier to learn.

It would also be easier for new users to find compared to projects - I’ve been on iNaturalist for years and never knew about the ID tips project! And I’m involved in A LOT of projects!

Good idea! I just created an umbrella project, combining three ID-help projects (if you know more, let me know).
But then again, one has to know it exists or use the right keywords to find it.

Anyways, here it is:

Such an ID TIPS button would be good

Excellent! I just joined.
You might take a look at the project ā€œCongeneric Comparisons.ā€ It is about helpful observations for ID, though not specifically ID tips.

I’ve done a few observations like this and thought about making a project for them, but it hasn’t happened. Now I’ve added them to that - much better, thanks!

That’s funny - I have a similar project running, and currently both projects are almost identical in observations and species

I think this is great!

Presume that option is restricted to Curators.
But someone with a useful ID info journal post - could ask to have theirs added?
Does that work?

It certainly should work, Diana. If anyone uploads some useful ID info in a journal post, I’ll be happy to add it to the appropriate More Info list.

@wynand_uys has 3 good journal posts

In the project Observations With ID Tips, I added this fake observation containing a link to a true observation that contains an ID tip. That’s how I proceed (in a very few cases) when Observer only allows other people to add their observations to traditional projects they have joined.
Are you going to ask me to delete this fake observation? :flushed:
I am ready to delete it, if it makes you feel better.

I guess that some observers forbid addition of their observations to traditional projects because they are annoyed by the notifications and because iNaturalist does not provide a better Management of Notifications. It’s a pity!
