Reptile Top 10!

About what I expected, apart from the amount of worm snakes I’ve found.

What are you supposed to call y’all? Reptilieners?

Well there are only 6 reptile species in Sweden and I have observed 2

Herpers?

Hahahaha

We lucked out: 7 reptiles tied for 10th haha!!

These are all our RG reptiles.

Four of them are threatened based on where they were observed (including Blandings, which is endangered globally).

A fairly healthy spread of tortoises/turtles and snakes, with an alligator thrown in too.

If iNat was around when I lived in England, slow-worms and common lizards would certainly be top two.

I have no reptiles at all. There aren’t any that like Alaska very much.

Time to go turtle hunting in Alaska. So what fills the lizard niche in your part of the world?

I imagine that the ecosystem here just doesn’t require reptiles, and it gets much to cold for them to survive.
There are a few observations of reptiles in Alaska on iNat. Some released turtles and, surprisingly, a sea turtle who was found in Alaskan waters.

Considering my research mainly focuses on Uta stansburiana, I was not surprised it was number 1. What has surprised me is how much I’ve enjoyed IDing some of the other species, like Iguana iguana. Identifying Ctenosaura has actually led me to a new research project on color differences in the species contact zones. The Basiliscus is just because they’re so easy to ID and so many observations in places like Mexico.

As I focus mostly on arthropods and plants, I wasn’t at all sure I would reach 10, but surprisingly, I did and here they are… accompanied on my part by a whole bunch of sunny and warm memories that are just what I need on this bitterly cold morning.

Only the turtles and garter snake are local. The Alligator and lizards are from traveling (all in U.S.)
I enjoy topics like this, which cause me to look at my observations in a new way, and rediscover things that I had forgotten.

Mugger (Marsh) Crocodile, Saltwater Crocodile, Gharial-Indian Black Turtle Combo, Burmese Python, Indian Rock Python, King Cobra, Asian Water Monitor Lizard, Yellow (Golden) Monitor Lizard, Bengal Monitor Lizard, Assam Roofed Turtle… No Space left for others

Is this for this year or lifetime?
