Request for Curator Help Uploading Custom Place Shapefile – Beardsley Community Farm (Knoxville, TN)

Hi everyone,

I’m a graduate student at the University of Tennessee working with Beardsley Community Farm in Knoxville, TN. My advisor and I recently installed a demonstration rain garden at the farm, and as part of our educational outreach, we’re developing signage that includes a QR code linking to an iNaturalist project.

The goal is to provide a digital plant list that visitors can view and contribute to via iNaturalist, helping us document native plants and any other species observed in and around the garden. For accuracy, we’d like to create a custom iNaturalist Place based on the precise boundary of the farm so that the project includes only relevant observations.

What I’ve Prepared:

Would a curator be willing to upload this Place on my behalf? I’d really appreciate your help with this educational project. Let me know if you need any additional info as I haven’t done this before!

Best,
Ash DeRegis

it’s better if you create your own place so that you can easily edit it, if needed. since you already have a shapefile, you just need to convert it to KML, and then you can use the KML file to define your place. here’s some information on creating a place: https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000175019-how-to-make-a-place-on-inaturalist.

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, please followed the steps in the Help page linked above and you should be able to create the place without any curator assistance needed.

You may also want to read some of the threads on the forum about issues with projects using small places.
