Requirements for adding a new language

Hi
I would like to inquire about the possibilities of adding Greenlandic as a new language in the iNaturalist app’s features to enhance opportunities for local community reporting of observations in the Arctic.

I am currently involved in a science project in Greenland, which also includes a citizen science element related to nature observations. Therefore, I am interested in exploring what it would entail if iNaturalist incorporated Greenlandic as a language option – do you think this would be possible? Perhaps we could assist in some way?

Kind regards

I moved this from Feature Requests to General since it wasn’t about adding new functionality and didn’t include the Feature Requests template.

Greenlandic is currently available as a lexicon on iNat, so I don’t think that there is a need to add it for common names. Info on adding lexicons can be found in this thread (https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/how-to-create-lexicons/18195) though that doesn’t need to be done for Greenlandic.

If the question above is about the iNat site/platform itself being in Greenlandic, translation of iNat is done via CrowdIn (info: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/introduction-to-translation-with-crowdin/23890) It looks like Greenlandic is available on CrowdIn, so you could help by doing any needed translation there.

I will add: anyone can add common names. Go to the “taxonomy” tab on a given taxon page, scroll doen to “Names.” If there is not already a name in Greenlandic, choose “Add a name.” This will let you type in a common name, then choose the lexicon from a dropdown. There is no way to do this in a batch; all names for all taxa were added individually to the respective taxon pages.

Thanks for guiding me on this. I will closer into this and see if there still may be a need for that we may contrubute via the crowdin function.

Hi - I can now see that only few species have also lexicon names in Greenlandic or Kalaallisut as inuit languages.

So I was looking for how to add names in these native languages where missing - but I cannot see the “Add a name” bottom on the taxonomy page of the species.

Can you guide me how to find the “add a name” buttom ?

Taxonomy tab.
Then scroll down, past the actual taxonomy to Names.
Add a Name’ is to the right.

You don’t have enough verifiable observations to meet the requirements needed to add names (this is an anti-trolling measure we added a few months ago) but I manually granted you the privilege of adding names.

Ok, I see, thanks
