A new publication with the above title redraws the species limits within this cactus genus. This might be important for Identification and i post a picture of the species distribution cropped from the above paper to help with ID

@mreith Thank you for sharing this, I can now identify my observations of Piloscereus as Pilosocereus moritzianus, although currently P. moritzianus is a synonym of P. lanuginosus.
