Seek app not connecting to Location even though enabled

As described, iNaturalist app works great, but the Seek app never connects to location services even though it is definitely enabled. Have tried clearing data and changing location settings but nothing fixes it. The app therefore ‘hangs’ when taking a new photo of something and never manages to store the photo, and only can work when I upload a photo I’ve already taken.

Android 13 (Security Update 5th of March 2025, Kernel 4.19.157-perf+), Fairphone 4 5G.

Seek App Version: 2.17.1

Fails at home page of app.

Step 1: Install the app

Step 2: Set the app to use location whilst the app is in use

Step 3: Log in to iNaturalist or don’t, the problem persists either way

Step 4: Try and take a photo of a species and press the button to record it

Step 5: Whether or not you have narrowed down to species, genus, or take any photo at all, a ‘loading’ wheel appears on the screen and no matter how long you wait on the app it never does anything.

Step 6: Try and manually set location, the app still will tell you it needs location services to function

Step 7: Check settings and see that the location settings are definitely turned on

Step 8: Clear app data and cached data, try reinstalling app, problem persists

Step 8: Repeat previous steps until I am certain it is the app that is the problem and report bug

for what it’s worth, i just installed Seek and am able to take photos and get species suggestions just fine, with or without location services on. (i’m running a Pixel 8a on Android 15.)

the “Species Nearby requires your location” message in your first screenshot applies only to that specific feature, not to taking photos and getting suggestions.

but if you still think your problem is related to location services, i would try checking to make sure they are actually turned on for the phone. even though you’ve enabled location permission on the app, are location services in Android turned on and actually getting a location? (before running Seek, can you open your default mapping app and actually see that it can pinpoint your current location?)

I had a friend try installing Seek on their Fairphone 4 and location services seemed to work fine and it displayed species nearby their area.

For them, it did also freeze when taking a new photo using the Seek camera.

seems like Fairphones have lots of problems with their default camera app in general: https://forum.fairphone.com/t/default-camera-app-having-trouble-saving-photos/106734.

@fluffychickens can you please send a log file from the app after you encounter this issue? That could provide us some insight into what’s going on. To send a log file, please make sure you’re logged in to iNaturalist in Seek. Then, go to the About screen and tap on the version number.
