Seriously Spooky Species

Couple of seaweed ones too - drowned sailors

I have been creeped out by this animal from the first time I saw it in my encyclopedias as a child. Luckily it hasn’t caught on in popular culture. But as an amateur naturalist it pops up too often. Not crazy about lotus seed pods either. Trypophobes, I am you.

that is a harmless shower head. For pond dwellers?

This crab spider I saw this summer looks like a glowing green skull with legs, but that’s mostly lighting/blurriness :)

Louse flies (Hippoboscidae) have always looked to me like something that could have been created for a horror movie.

One of the few animals that freak me out are bedbugs. Once had the unpleasant experience with a (luckily only) minor infestation due to a secondhand piece of furniture a roommate brought in, but that was enough to leave a lasting negative expression.

Overall, their ability to survive without food for many months, paired with their mating habits that sound like straight out of a splatter movie, and the whole “home invasion” schtick they have going on makes me really uncomfortable just thinking about them…

There are a lot of terrifying animals in the deep sea that look like aliens. I don’t know why, but the Magnapinna Squid scares me the most.

Another species of ghost bat. This is one of the World’s largest carnivorous bats. It feeds mostly on vertebrates, including other bats
