Simplemappr is being decommissioned, but a replacement is being developed

The SimpleMappr tool developed by David Shorthouse is being decommissioned. David explains why here: https://tinyurl.com/simplemappr .

I know that some people on iNaturalist use SimpleMappr to create distribution maps for species, based on their observations as well as data from other sources. If you use SimpleMappr, you might be interested in an effort to provide a replacement (based on David’s original code).

The project is SimpleMappr Dkr (don’t ask), and there is a version running at https://simplemappr.cloud. I am the author of this project, and my goal is to get something that does the basics well enough for people to find it useful. If you use SimpleMappr, I’d welcome any feedback (for example, via a GitHub issue https://github.com/rdmpage/simplemappr-dkr/issues ). This is very much a side project, so I can’t make any promises, but it felt like a shame to lose such a useful tool, one in which David had invested a lot of time in creating and running.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I’ve not added all the map layers (doh!). You can see what maps are available on the status page by clicking on “Status” at the top of the window. Some maps require being added manually, I’ll take a look at that.

Thanks for the heads-up. I had not heard about the decommissioning. I have a manuscript in review right now which includes SimpleMappr maps. I’m prompting the editor to expedite the review so that I won’t have to recreate the maps with other software…although SimpleMappr Dkr looks very useful!

David set a decomissioning date in the future in the hope that people would have enough notice to finish anything they were working on.
