Step 1: Open the ‘suggestions’ tab in Identify (or the ‘Compare’ pane on an observation page).
Step 2: Set the source to ‘Observations’.
Step 3: Occasionally species show up that have no local observations, and I can’t work out why (which also makes me wonder whether some are being missed - if I can’t rely on it one direction, is the other direction better?). Hakea sericea is always listed as present in the Grampians area despite having no local observations, and it’s been bugging me. When I noticed another example, it seemed post-worthy.
there is an observation of Hakea sericea at that outlier point, it’s just that it’s a casual record of a cultivated specimen. In the Compare module you have ‘Observations’ selected, which includes RG, Needs ID, and Casual, so the tool is behaving as expected. If you swap the source to ‘RG Observations’ you should see that point disappear. Obviously that’s not ideal if you want to include Needs ID stuff too, but this isn’t a bug, for the Hakea at least
For the Bedfordia I can’t find an obvious record at the outlier point; I wonder if there was one until very recently, and then it was corrected, and the system just hasn’t refreshed yet
I believe casual only shows up if you search for ‘Captive observations’? Certainly the list of Banksia species in the Grampians if I select ‘Observations’ is completely different from the list under ‘Captive observations’ (as the first example that occurred to me to try!).
thanks, no idea then. Seems like ‘Observations’ is misleading then if it doesn’t include captive records; should be ‘Verifiable Observations’ instead
