If I have an observation with two IDs at genus and somebody has checked for “Based on the evidence, can the Community Taxon still be confirmed or improved?” “No, it’s as good as can be,” and then a taxon split occurs and this observation has it’s IDs changed to tribe or subfamily level, will it go from research grade to casual? This could be an issue, because in cases like this usually only one of the resulting split subtaxa is a good match and there’s no need for an observation like this to get lost.
It shouldn’t, if the common ancestor is below family. But yeah it’d be left at the higher taxon when as you say it might be better to go back into Needs ID to narrow it to one of the output genera. There’s a very relevant feature request for this situation :) https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/reset-can-the-community-taxon-still-be-confirmed-or-improved-after-taxon-swap/9266
