Taxon suggested that is not expected nearby

Description of problem: I think this qualifies as a bug. I’m getting a suggestion for a taxon that is not expected on the continent where I am (South America). I have the option to “use location” enabled, and the location is set. The geomodel for the second suggested genus shows it as expected only in New Zealand, but this genus is offered whether I toggle “use location” on or off.

Step 1: In iNaturalist Next, select the option to upload photos from the gallery

Step 2: Select the first photo from this observation. The original has date and location metadata (accuracy 5 m).

Step 3: Click Add and wait for the automated suggestions. The top suggestion is Simulium, ok, but, unexpectedly, the second is Austrosimulium, a genus not found nor expected nearby.

Step 4: Repeat on the web uploader. Austrosimulium is only offered in the list of suggestions if I select “Include suggestions not expected nearby” (as it should be).

Step 5. Repeat on the old iOS app (version 3.3.4, build 719). Austrosimulium is only offered in the list of suggestions if I switch off “Show nearby suggestions only” (as it should be).

Thanks for reporting this and for providing helpful repro steps with a specific image. We’ve made a Github issue here.

I’ve had the same issue as well, I think once or twice. Despite using the location, there occasionally is a suggestion that is completely out of range. Take, for instance, the suggestions for an observation of mine from North America, where the CV suggests an Australian species.

From what I’ve seen, only the last suggestion appears to be from a completely different location, if at all
