You know how “asistir” means “attend” rather than “assist”? Or the time Estonia sent mycologists to investigate the Finnish government, but they went the wrong direction? I found a pair of these: Malvaviscus arboreus is called “altea” while Althaea officinalis is called “malvavisco” (marshmallow in English). Both are in the mallow family. Have you found any false friends like this?

Wisteria sinensis is called “glycine” or “glycinia” in a number of languages
This sometimes results in them being misidentified as soybeans (Glycine sp.)
Like the mallow example, they are both in the same family, so this is likely to result of some semantic drift between common and scientific names.
