I’m glad you got your answer. It makes sense, and made me think about my experience with them. In downstate Michigan I lived in cities to villages, all having neighborhoods. Your photos looked normal to me. I have since moved to west central Michigan in a very rural area. The squirrels here vary. The ones that raid the bird feeder are bigger than the ones in the woods. But they are definitely smaller than squirrels that live near people.
