@schizoform @yerbasanta, @keirmorse you have used my websites to compare plant species. Does the graphs for annotations help with your species comparison? Any suggestions to make the graphs better?

…Actually, there’s more to it and I don’t understand it. Clicking for example the Identifications link gets to https://wykhuh.github.io/inaturalist-explorer/identifications/, but control-clicking it (or right click/new tab) goes to https://wykhuh.github.io/identifications/ instead, and that 404’s. Something needs to be sorted out I think.

iNat forum doesn’t allow people to edit old posts. Previously it was hosted on GitHub pages, which is the link you are using. I should disable the GitHub pages version.

I put a link to the current website on home page of the old site hosted on GitHub. I didn’t realize that page was still up and running.

Sorry for the late reply. I missed your post the first time around. That original thread is closed, so I’m answering here.

I did fill out the application so I could add iNat login to my site, but haven’t heard back.

I added links to the iNat explore and identify page so people could use my site to build complex search queries using searchers and filters, and then export the query to the iNat site.

  1. Use search and filter to build the query
  2. Click the links icon (square with arrow) to view the iNaturalist links menu
  3. Click on the explore, identify or export link to go to the iNat page with the queries used on my site.

I regularly run into a specific issue. I use the explorer to find observations of eg one species in an area that I haven’t identified. From the explorer I jump to the iNat page or the application and identify the observations one by one. As soon as did the last and then get a (correct) zero result my profile name in the filter option turns to „undefined“. I than have to restore the filter options manually to proceed with an other taxon. I would prefer if the filter would still be set to my profile name and I would just need to select an other taxon

I can’t remember what I was trying on it before. With just a quick look before heading to work, it would be useful to be able to compare more categories between observed species. I just tried to compare flowering time between two species as a graph and it looks like that isn’t an option.

I think I fixed this bug. The name should not change to undefined. Let me know if there still problems.

I’m using the same data that iNat uses to produce the graphs on their taxa pages. Here’s a graph comparing “flowers and fruits” annotations for tropical milkweed and narrow leaf milkweed in California.

Can that data be extracted to show it in the same graph? It is really cool to see the graphs side by side but imagine if you could choose for Category one of the Flower and Fruits fields and for Group By you could choose observed species, and then it could be shown as a percent so they are more comparable if the are 100 observations vs 1000. If relatively easy to do, that would be very cool to see them in one graph, especially when there are more that just two species you want to compare.

Also, I just noticed that the colors don’t align between the legends in these two graphs.

I update the code so people can group by species using the annotation data. Only issue is that there is a lot of lines. I used colors for different annotation values and dashed lines to for different species. I would appreciate some feedback.

Here’s a csv of the data for the graph. Can you adjust the counts per month to show what you mean by show as a percent? iNat taxa page has relative portions option for the graph, but I’m not sure how those values are calculated.

Ha! Yeah, that is a bit much. Probably only great if you can choose one field at a time. Most people wanting to compare will likely want to compare just “Flowers” between species, though I could be wrong. Different fields could be of interest for different people.

Try adding the following to the end of that. Sum is the sum of all months. %Jan is the % of the sum from January. Same applies to the rest of the months.

Here is a comparison of the same data using the numbers vs the percents. Both are useful. Using percents makes them easier to compare when the numbers are very different. Straight up numbers may show where a lot more annotation is needed or that there are just a lot less observations of some species to annotate. In this example, we can see that R. californicum hits peak flower as R. menziesii gets going and R. menziesii peaks the next month. These two species might hybridize and there is clearly an overlap in flowering time to allow that.


Imagine if you could show something like this but with just flowering. That would be pretty cool to be able to simply compare four species!

Here is something I would like:

Include GFIF records the result as an option.
I sometimes like to compare things like: is this species new to the area? Which species should I expect in an area that might have been reported from other sources.

I updated the code on using custom rectangular box with graphs on Friday, but forgot to post here. Glad it works now.

Are you still having problems with the reviewer becoming undefined?

I plan on adding data sets to the site. First, I want to have the basic set of features to look at iNat data. Then I can add features to look at other data.

Yes. GBIF of course.

I tried to save my favorite configurations as several favorites on my phone.

While this works for some I get a blank view for others.
