West Virginia INATURALIST BIRDERS

I have never seen or heard a loon in WV, but they are so captivating. If you do, please at-mention me on iNat. (becksnyc)

I learned last year, they have two voice boxes, so are harmonizing with themselves!!!

Will do!

Have you ever seen a Double-crested Cormorant in West Virginia?

I hope you mean cormorant.

Anyone in West Virginia see any migrating ducks this past weekend?

I’m not in WV, but there are plenty of ducks coming through here in Maine!

Cool!

I have on ly ever been to West Virginia once, and we were only driving by on are way home from Florida. We did stop at a lookout and I remember hearing my first White-eyed Vireo! Not a bird that comes up into Ontario (Canada) much.

Very cool!

I had many in my area during the summer.

I saw four killdeer fly over our property yesterday. Anyone else see any lately? I know they mostly breed in West Virginia during the summer and go down south for the winter. But a few might stay during the winter because I’ve seen them during the winter here in West Virginia.

Oh, the killdeer is one of my nemesis birds.

Very interesting. I was looking at a range map for the United States and it shows that they breed in your area during the summer. Here is the range map:

I know, and I get tons of eBird alerts every year! That’s the annoying part.

Another one of my favorites is the American kestrel.

Do you see many Sandpipers during the summer up there in Maine?

In late summer (shorebird season), I see sandpipers, plovers, yellowlegs, and dowitchers!

Very cool! That’s about the same for me. I got to see my first Sandpipers at one of my ponds during late summer.
