This topic is an area for West Virginia INATURALIST BIRDERS.
One of my personal favorites is the White-Throated Sparrow.
I don’t remember many birds from the couple of times I was there, but I remember seeing some mockingbirds, so there you go. My favorite WV bird!
@oksanaetal very cool!
I once saw some unknown raptor eating a snake on the side of the road in eastern WV. Pretty neat to observe. But overall my trip there was much more focused on the very diverse plants, bryophytes, fungi, lichens of WV! There are some super interesting, relatively under-explored plant communities and bryophyte flora out there!
Edit- sorry didn’t mean to hijack your bird post and go on about plants, sometimes I get overly passionate haha
Edit again- oops turns out that was in the tip of VA, not WV, even though I was camping in WV that trip. So I’ve completely failed on this post, sorry! Still curious any thoughts you have on that observation though haha!
@porroglossum, looks like a Red-Shouldered Hawk.
Oh, the plants of West Virginia are wonderful! I wish I had found iNat earlier, back when I was about to travel there. Now I see that there are many more interesting plants (endemic trilliums!!!) there than the “boring old” trees I saw there (which I now realize were WALNUTS and HICKORIES )! I have been so ignorant most of my life.
Anyway, all this to say, you’re not alone in getting passionate about WV plants.
The only one I remember noticing when I lived there fifteen years ago was some kind of grackle.
@crellow. Yes we have the Common Grackle.
I remember seeing boat-tailed grackles in Florida, and know that they are common in New York. Do they live in West Virginia, too?
@oksanaetal. Good question. No we do not have the Boat-tailed Grackle in West Virginia.
Yesterday I saw a Swamp sparrow. Has anybody else seen any Swamp sparrows in your area?
Yes, I see plenty!
@oksanaetal. Very cool!
One of my favorite observations I had this spring was the Double-crested Comrat. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/249146849
That’s a really hard question to answer!
Favorite song: Wood Thrush & Northern Mockingbird
Favorite calls: Barred Owl
Favorite personality: Baltimore Oriole (sweet!) & European Starling (spunky!)
Favorite appearance: Wood Duck (male) & Red-headed Woodpecker
Most awe-inspiring: Bald Eagle
Want to see again: Prothonotary Warbler & Cedar Waxwing
Want to know better: Common Raven
I have only seen about 1/3 of the birds reported in West Virginia, but I’ve been a little moth-obsessed. Come on over to the Moths of West Virginia project!
I have been recording every new plant I see here for about 7 years, and I’ve only seen about 14% of the species recorded here on iNat. This state is AMAZINGLY diverse!!!
Thrushes have really cool songs!
I just now joined!
I want to see a common loon. Any birders from West Virginia seen any?
