Martes flavigula - 노랑목도리담비 - Yellow-throated Marten

Heard some rustling in the bushes to my right and a marten came strolling out onto the trail and we shared one of those comic book moments when two characters stop and stare at one another in surprise before it scurried back the way it came. Caught the sound of yipping and growling, then one shot across the trail while a second climbed a tree and took off in arboreal pursuit. Disappointed not to get any better photos but very excited to have had the encounter!

Protected by law in South Korea as an endangered species and a very surprising addition to my iNaturalist life list. The iNaturalist calendar is reporting that this is the first Mustelid I’ve uploaded as well.

Still have a cuple of hours to observe, but I’m mostly proud about successful id of Ancistrocerus parietinus and first ided Spirogyra in the region.
Of course, there’s a bunch of new insects and lepidoptera names are always funny! Square Spot, Twin-spotted Quaker, Gold-ribbon Argent (this one likely is not lifer, but the one ided so far), Brindled Beauty, Dotted Border and poor Semioscopis avellanella without English name.

my only lifer this week was one I didn’t even know was a lifer at the time; thought they wer emore pipevine swallow tails but apparently they were red spotted…somethings.

Oh well, had a lot of fun with the kids and relations–though taking one 2 year old, two 7 year olds, an da 9 year old on nature hikes is challenging. The 2 year old wanted to talk to this…absolutely gigantic beetle we found and tried to offer it a bit of her granola bar

I have two lifers this week, courtesy of the City Nature Challenge:

The larva of a Water Penny Beetle, genus Psephenus: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/114618060

A green lichenized fungus, genus Solorina: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/114462889

That’s assuming that iNat’s suggestions were correct - they seem to be, from what I could find out, but I know I’ve never seen either of these genera before.

I saw two Red Foxes today, the first in around 3 years. I even found their den. It’ll probably be a while before I upload the photos though, I’m way behind.

Oops, the gopher snake is not really a lifer, as i saw 2 smaller ones previously.I guess I got a bit excited. But, at least it is my best gopher snake OBs to date.

I found a plain plume moth first time I’ve ever seen one.

I found what I believe to be Tigrosa annexa, and if I’m right, that would be the first observation of the species from OH!

Plume moths are unbelievable, I’ve just seen them once but I was really surprised when I saw it that day.

On Saturday night, April 30th, I got home from four weeks on the small island of Nevis, West Indies, where I found a lot of lifers.

But today I was amazed to find a lifer right here on the block where I live. it is a very spectacular and rather large fungus which is a plant pathogen on Junipers.

It is called “Tongues of Fire”:
