Zooming into images of uploaded observations is extremely buggy

Please fill out the following sections to the best of your ability, it will help us investigate bugs if we have this information at the outset. Screenshots are especially helpful, so please provide those if you can.

App version number: App-Version 0.51.0 (120) on iPhone 13 mini running iOS 18.0.1

Screenshots of what you are seeing: If requested, I might upload a video later, and post a link, but I currently do not have any accounts on websites where you can upload videos and screenshots don’t really show the problem…

Description of problem: Occasionally (more often than not), zooming into images of your own uploaded observations works extremely poorly. Usually it gets stuck at very low zoom, and any attempt at zooming in further just moves around the entire image on the black background. Closing and reopening the image fixes this, but it gets annoying to have to do this almost every time.

(Sorry - trying to keep up with issues that I don’t use, in case I come across obs which are battling with ‘that’)

Are you able to share a screen recording of the latter? I don’t think I’ve experienced that.

There are definitely some bugs and slowness in general when viewing a photo.

This is a bug report for iNaturalist Next. Are you using iNaturalist Next?

Sorry for the low quality, I made it a GIF so I didn’t have to create an account on a new platform.
I’m doing the exact same thing the first and second time after opening the image, but the first time it won’t zoom in any further and instead the image moves around like that.

P.S.: Also, this issue does not go away with restarting the app

iPhone 14 Plus, iOS 17.6.1, iNat Next 0.51.0 (120).
Steps:

  1. Open iNat Next. View my observations in list or grid format. Tap on one to examine.
  2. Tap on the image at top of page to view separately. Try to zoom (or back out to full size) with two finger zoom.

I’ve periodically had the same problem with clunky zoom on my observations with Next, but it is intermittent and I’m not able to reproduce it at the moment. It may be that zooming works fine when I’m on wifi at home, but works haltingly when I’m accessing via weak cell service (even 5G not far from home). A weak cell signal may be the issue for me.

Thanks for reporting. I wonder if this is happening for other user’s observations as well? If so, we already have an issue for this: https://github.com/inaturalist/iNaturalistReactNative/issues/2259

Yes, the same thing is happening on observations by others too. I just checked

Happens on the app for me, too. Never said anything because lazy. :grimacing:

Just an update, we should have a fix for this out this week. It had the unfortunate side-effect of breaking zoom entirely on Android, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to the Android release.

Was this one fixed?
Slightly different so perhaps I should log separately(?), but for me, on iPhone 13, it often just crashes when I zoom in…I get a “failed to upload” screen and I have to reselect the photos and start all over again.

( tried to recreate to screen record but unable so far …will document next time it happens )

it is worst if you’re on an observation with multiple photos: zoom into one of them and then go to the next photo using the bottom navigation pane, then zoom into that photo aswell and repeat. Now switch between all the photos using the bottom navigation pane and watch the chaos unfold.

edit: I should mention: I’m on iOS 18.1.1, using iNat Next 0.55.3 (130)
same thing happens on iPadOS 18.1.1, using iNat Next 0.55.3 (130)

Thanks for sharing the screen recording @timo27! We have an issue for this, so we’ll get it fixed at some point.
