2022 photography competition

Oof, so hard to choose just three! Here goes…

A Southern Brown Tree Frog (Litoria ewingii) poking its head up through some muddy water in the middle of the night. Was it worth it, squatting in the mud and the rain at 1am on a cold winter night? Yes. Yes it was :P

One of my absolute favourite animals, a female Elise’s Fishing Spider (Dolomedes vicque) standing on the surface of the water and showing off her amazing ‘invisible shoes’! Special hairs on her feet (and all over her body) prevent her from breaking the surface tension, but she’s so heavy that she indents the surface of the water where she touches it, causing this weird refractive pattern of shadows as light gets deflected to the edges of the shadows.

And finally a stunning blue male Tropical Rockmaster (Diphlebia euphoeoides) perching above some rapids. This species only lives where there is fast-flowing water, especially where there are falls and rapids. I was very surprised he let me get this close without flying off!

Whats the criteria? Are voting best photo that makes us laugh, that makes us want to read more, that surprises us, or that we want to buy a print for the living room?
