About adding Common names

Hello,

I live in Georgia and noticed that most species do not have common names specified in Georgian.
Also noticed, that we can add the common names.

As an “experiment”, I added a name for the Common Cuckoo and marked “Should this common name be shown by default for this taxon?” to “False”, because many users here don’t necessarily know Georgian (at least I assume they are foreigners/tourists and at least I assume that flag would show that name to everyone within the region).
Right out of the gate, I see the common name I’ve added in the list, but it is crossed-out.

I have a few questions:

  1. Was marking that “shown default” flag as “False” a mistake? (asking because of that crossed-out thing; maybe just language preferences were enough to prevent what I stated as the concern)
  2. Is there a curation/review process on these common names such that no one submits incorrect or a made-up name?

You don’t need to worry about the language an iNatter uses, or knows - those are settings we can control.
We can choose up to 3 languages - so they could choose to show Georgian, or not.

Yes, you don’t need to mark it as false. The language preferences are enough for users to control what they see.

Any curator can edit or remove names, and any user can create a flag to request changes to incorrect or inaccurate names

@DianaStuder @deboas Thank you! I will change the flag and maybe add names for the few species I know down the line.
Also, it’s great that there are mechanisms that can protect against incorrect names.

No worries. It’s a good idea to include a link to a reference or references in the comments if you add a name. Your activity will be recorded in the history of that taxon, and it helps others later to evaluate why the name was added.

Thanks! Will keep that in mind.
