Acceptable Projects

I created a project just for my observations for tracking my progress on iNaturalist and is an umbrella project that is on the year while the subprojects within the umbrella project is based on months. I am wondering if personal usage of projects are okay for this program and wondering what are standard and unspoken guidelines of projects on iNaturalist. Does anyone else use projects to track their progress and travels through their observations?

No reason why not.
You can also use the life list options. Change my name, and location to yours.

there’s nothing that prohibits the creation of your projects, but it’s not clear to me how keeping individual monthly projects helps you. after all, you can just as easily just query for any set of observations in the Explore page by any date range you like.

I even use personal projects for other persons observations, for instance:

  • a project for observations I would like to check later (to identify them later, after I learn more),
  • projects for leaves, flowers and fruits that are uncommon but easy to recognize, whose names I can’t remember (more convenient than “adding to favorites”),
  • a project for my favorites observations.

[Traditional] projects are “lists of observations” and “lists” or “arrays” are very basic and necessary objects in Information Technology. We do need projects, for sure.
