Info For Records You Want Passing To iRecord To Be Used In The UK:
If you use iNaturalist and want your records to be passed to iRecord for verification and use in the UK then, you can help the recording scheme verifiers by following the guidelines provided below whenever possible:
Choose an open licence for your records in iNaturalist: CC0 or CC BY will enable your records and images/photos to be used as widely as possible and are the preferred choice; CC BY-NC (non-commercial) can prevent records being used by some schemes and records centres. Other licence choices (such as SA and ND) are difficult to interpret for individual records, and cannot be used in iRecord or the NBN Atlas (nor on GBIF).
If adding records to the iNaturalistUK website, ensure that you zoom in to the map when setting the location, so that the records have an accuracy measure of 100 metres or less. This will ensure that a reasonably accurate grid reference can be assigned to them on import to iRecord.
Avoid obscuring locations unless absolutely necessary, as this can prevent them being linked to grid references of suitable precision for recording scheme use
Provide your real name if possible; this can be added as the “Display name” in your iNaturalist profile, and will then be used as the recorder name on iRecord.
Now that the record import is in place in iRecord to allow iNaturalist data to be imported, it is helpful if you can avoid adding the same record to both iNaturalistUK and iRecord, to avoid duplication of both records and of verifiers’ time.
Noted. Have added a display name, and changed my obscured records to open. I’ve also amended my record licences.
Some of my records have a location with accuracy set to +100m, usually for records of birds in flight. My existing records will have to stay as they are, as I don’t know a way to amend location accuracy without having to check through every record individually - unless anyone knows a way to search/filter records by location accuracy?
I noticed #4, is a real name necessary to have your records included on iRecord? Can a username suffice? I noticed you said “if possible”, so I’m wondering if only having a username associated with your account will impact if your records are used or not.
I would add (certainly for invertebrate records at least) please also indicate the stage of the observation (Adult, Larva, Pupa, Egg etc.) on here so it gets passed across.
Opinions vary. Some recording schemes will simply reject records in batch if they do not have a real name associated.
Some will accept them provided there is a plausible uniquely identifying name - which I would say an iNat identity (with the fact it is an iNat identity appended to it) could be said to provide.
For moths in Northumberland, where I’m involved in the record verification, we’re still considering what to do with such records. I’m not throwing them out yet but we have not reached a view on whether we will send them across to the national moth recording scheme when it comes time to do that.
You already have a good response to this question, but I will just add that if you use iRecord separately it is most important to use the same name on both.
