Allow Z+arrow keys to pan image when zoomed without the mouse on Identify

I had proposed in another thread, but bumping to it’s own request here; discussion from Enable up/down arrows in Identify modal:

Platform(s): Website

Description of need:
Allow keyboard ninjas to zoom and pan the photos while identifying.

When I’m identifying, I often zoom in on the photo. However, then I need to use my mouse to pan around on the photo further. This wastes precious milliseconds of my life.

Feature request details:
Existing functionality:

  • press and release z once = zoom in to center of photo.

    • you can pan around with the mouse
  • if already zoomed in, press z once again to revert to original display size of photo

proposed functionality:

  • press and hold z = image will be zoomed in and you can use the arrow keys to pan around it.

  • when zoomed holding z and you let z go, image goes back to its original display size

Alternatively (if proposal not possible):

  • Allow a set of other keys to serve as up/down/left/right pan function on the zoomed image without needing to hold z, without stepping on existing shortcuts. something like j=left, k=right, i=up, m=down Though, I didn’t look if those are available on all tabs. Perhaps there’s a standard for letters used as directions from the gamer world?

Not sure if this is technically possible, but I do get annoyed when I have to use my mouse to pan.

So in your proposal:

  • press and release z once = zoom in to center. you can pan around with the mouse
  • if already zoomed in, press z once again to revert to original display size?
  • press and hold z = image will be zoomed in and you can use the arrow keys to pan around it. wha happens when you let z go, does the image stay zoomed in, or go back to its original display size?

Glad I’m not alone.

Good questions, I update the post to be more specific. Though I am also unsure on the technical requirements, it could be accomplished other way perhaps, the goal being non-mouse panning of the zoomed image.
