Android crashes when trying to import photos taken with 108 MP camera

Platform Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (Android)

App version number: 1.30.15

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) : N/A

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem: I have been having a consistent problem for about two years now where iNaturalist will not upload photos taken with my phone using the 108 MP camera on my Samsung S21 Ultra.

What will happen is I will take the picture, but when I upload it to iNat the upload crashes leaving an empty observation. This happens regardless of whether I share the file from Gallery or import the file in iNat.

It used to be when I did this it would crash a couple of times, then I would be given the option to clear cache, and then the upload will go through. Not anymore, now I get a message (attached) that there is a bug with iNaturalist and I should wait until the developers fix it.

I did some tests and this cannot be due to the uploaded files being too large. I trimmed some of them down to a much more manageable size and the app still crashes. This happens even if I save the cropped image as a copy rather than as is.

Step 1: Take photo of object using 108 MP setting on phone

Step 2: Upload to iNat

Step 3: Crash occurs

I have a Samsung S21 Ultra aswell and i was not able to reproduce the bug. Ive just sucessfully uploaded this 108MP 25MB file through the Android app (version 1.30.15):

After it crashes, please re-open the app and send us log files. To send log files, go to the About tab in the iNaturalist app and tap three times on the version number. You will then have the option to email the log files to us.

You will then have the option to email the log files to us.

I have sent off the log files

Thanks Russell, we’ll take a look.
