Please fill out the following sections to the best of your ability, it will help us investigate bugs if we have this information at the outset. Screenshots are especially helpful, so please provide those if you can.

Platform (Android, iOS, Website): Huawei P30 Pro, VOG-L29, Android version 10

App version number, if a mobile app issue (shown under Settings or About): 1.35.1 (615)

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) :

Screenshots of what you are seeing (instructions for taking a screenshot on computers and mobile devices: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org/):

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

Step 1: upload picture by clicking “+”, choose image, go to “photos”, select the picture I want to upload, then click “Done”

Step 2: Receive a message “Photo format not supported”

I also have this problem and reinstalled
v1.35.0+614 which solved the issue.,

Are you able to share log files from the app the next time this happens? To send log files, go to the About tab in the iNaturalist app and tap three times on the version number. You will then have the option to email the log files to us.

Also, are you editing the photos in your photo app before importing into iNat?

In my case these are plain photo’s from the default camera app and one photo I got from Whatsapp.

What version of Android OS is your device running?

Platform Android: 10

Thanks. Definitely a bug that seems to be affecting the new version of the app for devices running Android 10. We’re investigating the issue and will have fix out as soon as possible. If anyone can send us log files from the app after you see the error, that would be really helpful.

Thanks! Received.

I have noticed that it depends greatly on the wireless connection. I have this issue when uploading using files>dropbox on Android 14.2.0.1.150

On the wifi 1, staying close to the router, no issues most of the time. It may still happens when selecting several pictures to upload at once. If I try again same photos where its signal is weak, it happens always. Even by selecting just 1.

On wifi 2, another brand of router on a friends house, no issues until the bandwidth dropped due to high utilization by other devices or bad carrier.

If I switch to my mobile carrier, it works ok as long as the signal and assigned bandwith is good. I have 45mb plan.

This might be a timeout between the transfer of the file and the available bandwidth for upload you have on the device. Or something alike

I have the same problem, I also tried to upload the images which I successfully uploaded two days ago with the same result.

I’d like to be notified when this gets fixed
I’ve also sent the logs.

Also Android 10?

yes, Android 10

OK, we’ve released an alpha version of the app here https://github.com/inaturalist/iNaturalistAndroid/releases/tag/v1.35.3%2B617 It would be great if a few of you could try it and see if it fixes the problem for you.

Here’s how to install it:

  1. On your phone, go to https://github.com/inaturalist/iNaturalistAndroid/releases/tag/v1.35.3%2B617
  2. Under “Assets” tap on the .apk file to download it
  3. You will likely need to allow the app to be downloaded and installed.
  4. Once it’s installed, try importing photos that were causing the error and let us know what happens.

Great! I’ll let our developer know. Hopefully we can get it out to the Play Store soon.
