Annual Citizen Science Initiatives

I work for a nature center in central Illinois, and in part I coordinate exhibits and outreach programming. At the moment, I’m trying to compile a list, both of holidays and of initiatives, such as the ongoing Gall Week, so that I can keep ideas in mind for exhibits or for programming to run. We participated in Moth Week by having live moth traps setup, some bug lighting setups, and small exhibits on moths. I’d love to be able to continue similar work and promote iNaturalist for future citizen science initiatives. Does anyone know either, A. similar initiatives throughout the year and when they take place, or B. a calendar of such events available anywhere? I’d love to just be able to compile a big list that I’d be happy to share of all holidays or initiatives that are relevant to my work.

Thank you!

The educational programs in Michigan parks might bring you some deals…

There’s the annual City Nature Challenge.

Pollinator Week in 2026 is scheduled for June 22-28.

I know there is Project Feederwatch or something similar for birds, but I don’t recall when. It may not be a national thing…

Connor,

One resource is the events page on SciStarter: https://scistarter.org/events

What is SciStarter?

In addition to participating in global events, you could also create your own events. For example, in September, there will be a native plant conference in Colorado:

At your nature center, you could write,

To celebrate the upcoming conference on native plants, it’s officially Native Plant Week at our nature center!

Let’s learn to use iNaturalist to explore the incredible native plants in our own backyard. Join us for workshops where we’ll:

  • Learn how to photograph and upload plant observations
  • Discover how your data supports conservation and research
  • Explore native plant habitats on guided walks

Every observation helps scientists track biodiversity and protect native ecosystems.

Let’s celebrate native plants, connect with nature, and contribute to citizen science!

Connor,

Have you signed up for the iNat Ambassador Program? There’s a webinar about it tomorrow! (2025 Sep 11)

Aha! I wondered why my wife was reading Asterix and Obelisk.

please call it community science! Not only does being a citizen have nothing to do with it, community also rolls off the tongue and sounds nicer.

Can druids find Gauls while gathering mistletoe?

Well, I suppose I’ve found galls while looking at mistletoe, so why not! :-)

(I didn’t gather it because it’s in a National Park. Oh, and I forgot my golden scythe.)

Lol, so not the only one punning off Asterix - we did an orchid talk recently and I could not help but share about the magic of orchids like this
