Birding/Birdwatching Discussion Topic

I woke up this morning to find a couple inches of snow on the ground. I heard some chickadees calling a few minutes ago but I’m not to keen on going out and getting frostbite just so I can get some pictures of them ;)

Lol! That cool!

I have completed the Bird of the week challenge. Earlier I was outside and heard a Mallard down at my pond calling.

I went down to the ocean after my hand therapy appointment, hoping to see some ducks. I didn’t see any but instead I just combed around the beach. There were some eagles, gulls, and lots of crows around.

I also saw some swans.

Awesome thanks for sharing!

Tomorrow morning will be my last bird walk for 2024 at Soil Born Farms in Rancho Cordova, California. It is always a lot of fun doing these walks and I should knock out my bird of the week challenge because I usually see Wood Ducks and Mallards at the farm. It is the last one of the year because all the Saturdays in December are locked down with the American River Natural History Association Winter Wildlife Census and Christmas Bird Counts. We’re also less than a week away from the Central Valley Birding Symposium in Stockton, California. That event is always a blast and it starts next Thursday evening.

Sounds like fun!

I went duck-watching again. Lots of birds, including two lifers and a rarity! (The rarity,
a redhead, is one of the lifers.)

Greater scaup
Northern pintail
American widgeon (lifer!)
Redhead (lifer, rarity!)

I forgot to mention, I saw four or five ring neck pheasants today, too. We don’t get to see them a lot. Unfortunately, my camera picked a bad time to run out of battery, and I didn’t get any photos.

I’m so glad!

So cool! That stinks that you’re camera ran out of battery life.

This morning I’m in the woods again. I wish you all were here. The Hermit Thrush are calling like crazy here in my woods. Also the Northern Mockingbirds are to. Plus the Carolina Wrens. Here’s a little audio
clip of the Hermit Thrush. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/251873376

I have basically no hope of seeing ducks this week. The best I can report is some Canada Geese which I saw flying overhead yesterday.
I’ll count them, because at least geese are in the same Family as ducks.
I didn’t get a photo, though. And there were only three. Probably not migrating, because they are resident here year-round,

Awesome thanks for sharing! At least you saw some Geese.

I saw some more pheasants today and this time my camera was almost fully charged.

The bald eagle has somehow made it to the top of my species list. I didn’t think I took that many photos of them, just one here and there when I saw them.
