Birding/Birdwatching Discussion Topic

Awesome! Glad your camera was charged.

Let’s go! It’s so exciting to see which bird species wins.

That’s a nice discussion. I never considered myself a birdwatcher because I didn’t do it actively, but passive birdwatching is something I definitely do.
While I really love birds, I prefer making macro observations. The photos allow me to see stuff I never could have just with just my eyes.

You’re exactly right that’s why I love bird observations with pictures.

I went out looking for birds and wildlife with a local friend this morning, we spotted a juvenile red-tailed hawk, saw a big flock of yellow-rumped warblers at least 50, and a few big RWBB flocks, a couple eastern bluebirds, and got a look at a western meadowlark though no decent photos. Heard a white-throated sparrow singing, and heard a late white-eyed vireo.

Everyone please spread word about the bird of the week species voting. We have only ten votes and all together we have 28 users on the thread. Thanks so much!

I was out on a walk but prepared with a camera, and on my way back I saw a Barred owl and was able to get within 20 or so feet and watch and the owl was completely unconcerned. They flew from one branch to another and it was completely silent. I have seen owls before but getting so close and watching for 10 minutes was amazing. The lighting was low but I still got some photos and a video though I did have to zoom out a bit. The photos are still on the SD card.

In warmer weather I carry a spare but now that it is cold I do not want to risk damaging two batteries at once!

That’s awesome! Barred Owls are so cool!

I know! I find it such a treat when I see them and not just hear them. They are so blended in I bet I walk past many!

The Gulls win! The bird of the week is the Gull. Try to complete the challenge and find the Gull. Have a fun time while doing so.

Oh dear, not much hope of my doing that. But it’s my own fault, for failing to vote!

Me too! I don’t have any Gulls in my area.

I actually saw some ducks yesterday, a bit late though, and I didn’t get any photos.

Did you see what kinds there were?

Maybe a harlequin duck? I’m not sure. I only saw them from the rear while they were flying.

this is way back in the thread at this point, but I figured I’d mention that I also am very much not a morning person but I am an avid birder and I’ve managed to get along just fine birding in the afternoon/evening (~4-6pm). Bird activity is probably 60-75% of what it is in the morning, and I find it works well for waterfowl if you’re by a wetland when they all come in to roost for the night. I also tend to be the one to get good counts of migrating nighthawks, haha. I’ll get up at the crack of dawn for Christmas Bird Counts, Global Big Days, major events like that but otherwise, I’m as night owl as they come :)
So I’d say don’t let that deter you from birding! Yes, there is a low period mid-day, like 11-3pm, but depending on the habitat there are still birds active, and they definitely pick back up again after that. Everyone can find their own way to interact with a hobby!

Thanks so much for sharing! That was such a great answer. I totally agree with you about how you said:

As I was sitting in the woods I heard a American kestrel calling. There a very cool falcon.
