Hehe I’m a big fan
Yesterday I got to see a house sparrow chick just outside of my house fledge. It was really special, (even though it is an evasive species) because it’s the chick of a bird I’m really good ‘friends’ with. My little friend is Simon and I get to feed him seeds. I don’t know what to name the chick though, and I’m not exactly sure if it’s a male or female. I think it’s a male. If it is, I’ll name it Simon Jr, but if it’s a girl, I don’t know what to name it, so if anyone has ideas, that’d be great!
Lord of the Rings is awesome.
I’ve also found a chick a few days ago, but a blue tit chick. Really nice to see, but isn’t there early for tit chicks? Couldn’t get a good picture though
Cute! I would like to take a photo, but I can’t because it hid itself. I’m not sure, we don’t have tits here in Australia. Do you mean to early to fledge?
Maybe if it’s a girl you could name it Rosie.
Yeah, maybe I will! Thanks :)
I read the books like four times. I’ve watched the movies so many times. I’ve also read the Silmarillion.
A question for y’all: how do you find birds? I’ve seen so many obs of people with birds in their hands… but how do you guys find them? I’ve only found a collared dove chick on the street once and a sparrow chick…
I’m surrounded by birds so it isn’t too hard. Mostly our noisy but beautiful cockatoos, magpies and ravens, and bird of prey. Then I get a heap of little ones. But if I’m looking for a specific bird, or just a good bird spot, I go to the places I’ve see them before, or I find new places if I can. The most common spot for me is down the road from my house. We get a lot of birds.
I do a daily eBird list and I have for 2225 days in a row now. I regularly get between10 and 20 species from standing in my front yard.
It’s definitely a girl, I can now tell, and it’s named Rosie!
You are a legend!!!
I know several people with longer streaks but I have definitely well filled out my bar chart for my yard list which is really cool. I know when to expect most of the migrating birds to pass through my yard thanks to the eBird data.
I did eBird’s eBird Essentials video training thing, and honestly, it was really helpful. For the longest time, I’ve been really hesitant to do bird lists because I thought it was for super serious birders only. I did my first list of the year today and got 11 birds in my yard, including a “kinda uncommon” Townsend’s warbler.
That’s great. I lead bird walks at a local organic urban farm a short drive from my house. The people that go on my walks are mostly beginning birders and I always share the bird walk list with them via eBird so they can create their own account and have that be their first list. I always try to emphasize that people of any skill level can contribute and that over time your skills will improve. We all start out at the same place.
That’s definitely a bonus!
Congratulations that is awesome! Nice Warbler find too.
That is my thoughts too!
Aww such a cute name!
Today, she climbed over my fence and into my neighbour’s yard, I was a little worried, because I was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to get back out again, but I saw her on the fence again. So she can fly well.
The Bird of the Week poll is open.
