Yay! For once, I’m going to get a bird of the week! Asian/ Cinerous tits visit my bird pools every week (as long as other birds don’t scare them away).
Well, of course I’m going to pick the Sparrows because of my new little friend Rosie, and Simon. Although they are an invasive species, we can never get rid of them, so why not make friends with them?
The bird of the week poll is closed . The Chickadees/Tits win! So sometime this week try to find the bird of the week and share your knowledge about the species. Until then happy birding!
Are sparrows common where you live? In my part of india, sparrows are pretty rare ( I’ve only seen a lone house sparrow during a road trip.).
It’s not a good photo but it’s a great tit in the picture so… bird of the week found, yet I’ll keep taking photos to get a better one.
They are very common where I am. Just like in America, they are invasive. I have some nesting just outside my house, even though we’ve tried to get rid of them.
Cool!
I didn’t know that you could share lists until doing the training! Unfortunately, I don’t think my coworker who got me into birding knows how to use it, or is terribly inspired to do so LOL. But that’s okay. The point is to help gather data, not to pat myself on the back over spotting a rail, anyway.
Finally saw 2 female bullfinches! Sad because they were too far to take a picture with my phone, I had no camera :( with me but… they still count!
I don’t use eBird because it doesn’t allow you to private the location without completely privating it. But I would use it if I went somewhere far away from where I live
I actually agree with you on that. Something I do is use the closet area to me but not so close that it gives the area away.
The closest area to me? I still don’t want people to know stuff close to where I live.
Btw I meant like it completely privates the checklist instead of just privating the location and how do I spell privating like it says it’s incorrect?? I thought I know how to spell?
@Vermfly what’s your thoughts about this ?
I’ve seen people use a pin near their house but not at their house in an area. I have a “_______ Neighborhood” location that isn’t pinned at my house but is in the same suburban neighborhood habitat type.
eBird has a couple of suggestions. In the help area for Yard and Patch List Privacy they say,
eBird Patch and Yard lists are an easy way for eBirders to summarize and compare local lists. However, a few considerations are worth remembering:
- The most recent eBird checklist submitted from a location in your Patch or Yard list will always be visible to others unless you hide the checklist from public output.
- Only species on publicly visible checklists from your patch will count towards your Patch Total and Rank. Species on hidden checklists will appear on your patch species list (visible only to you). However, species on hidden checklists will not count towards your patch totals, and will not display in the summary statistics.
The Patch Listing pages are a way for other eBirders to see what you have been seeing. Keep in mind that they are a bit more public, and may not be appropriate if you regularly bird areas with sensitive species or privacy issues.
They also mention using the nearby pin idea.
How do I report birds from my home without telling people where I live?
First, you can rename the location so your address is not visible. You can also place or move the location pin to somewhere close by along your street—such as the nearest intersection—and use the street name for the location name.
So those are a couple of options.
I just looked it up, and you can use “privating” or if you want to use the correct word for it, it’s “privatising”. :)
I want it to be completely private, like nowhere near where I live to be shown.
The only way to do that is to hide the list from public output. It will still count for your lists and top 100 and stuff like that but I don’t believe any of the data is available including for science-related things.
Then I will only make checklists if I go to a place that ain’t that close to where I live. For example, Canada since I don’t even live there and it is hours away.
That’s why iNaturalist is better!
