Depends. My mom dislikes cats, but I don’t really mind them. My neighbors don’t have any strong feelings about cats, so in general my street is pretty ‘meh’ when it comes to cats.
It’s a subspecies of the same bird ([Indian Hoopoe, Upupa epops ssp.ceylonensis). I too saw the raised crest, but wasn’t able to photograph it. I saw the hoopoe on a road trip, and a passing bus scared it away.
I’m so happy to hear that! Keep doing what you can to make your property bird friendly. One of the best things people everywhere, even in urban areas, can do is to provide some source of food/water/shelter on their patio or balcony.
It’s finally back!
My year-round feathered neighbour has finally returned! It’s been missing for a couple of months, because of the fireworks I think. I was worried that it won’t come back anymore but I’m really happy that it’s here once again! I know this little fellow since it was a tiny chick and I’ve been kinda missing it this winter :)

I’m not sure that’s a good idea if he has cats that visit the property.
Anyone have a good discussion starter to help create a deeper subject in the thread?
At this point, everywhere, rural or urban, is going to have cats. I can’t think of a place I have gone to that didn’t have either people’s free range cats, barn cats, or feral cats.
Right, but there’s a cat coming right to that location.
“Question of the Day”
How can we support bird conservation as an everyday birder?

Great answer! That is definitely a wise thing to do.
Sign petitions, buy duck stamps, basically anything you can that helps.
If you own property or can plant at the place you rent plant local native plants. Encourage that to your neighbors and friends. Native plants support native food webs starting with insects. Without insects birds cannot raise their young.
Thanks! I tried providing food or bird nests, but birds don’t seem to notice. The fruit and seed I scatter are mostly ignored. My bird nests are being dismantled by birds to make nests. So at the moment, I’m focusing on trying to help bigger birds (eg, Kites) who are effected the most by this climate. I might add a sunbird feeder to my balcony, but idk where to keep it. All the ledges are filled with bird pools, and the ceiling is a mess of spiders.
A question of the week? Awesome!
My opinion is this : People can help birds by making our backyards more bird-friendly, like adding native plants (like @Vermfly said), adding bird-pools, feeders, and nesting supply. It helps if you add trees that provide fruit, which attracts both birds and other creatures. You could also make ebird checklists and learn about your local birds.
I am a bit worried, but I can’t do anything about it. Plus, it rarely visits. So if I can’t fight them, might aswell befriend them.
Yeah, my mum and brother are both allergic to them, especially my brother, and my dad doesn’t like them. I sorta like them, but only when they’re inside, because we’ve had a several strays over the years, and I have a bird, and although he’s in a secure aviary outside, we’ve had a couple cats, or the same one, walk on his aviary roof. I think he’ll be ok, but my bird has gotten quite frightened by them. I’m sure he could kill a cat (not really) because he’s attacked my dad and my brother on several occasions and done some injuries for such a small bird! :)
My dad once threw a rock at a regular cat we had coming to our place, and we never saw it again. And anyway, we can always just grab the cats, and chuck them across the fence. We live next to a hunter, he’s got hunting dogs. They are awesome dogs. I got to meet them when they were pups
But we wouldn’t do that. :)
Lol,
Neither would I!
