Thanks for answering the “Question of the Day” yesterday. All your answers were awesome! It’s nice to know that other birders care about bird conservation.
Question of the Day
Are you a birder or birdwatcher? Tell us why.

Both! But more birder.
Birdwatcher.
- My mobility is currently limited.
- I’m not very competitive. :)
So, if If I post 10 bird species(common to my area) in any given week to iNat while sitting in front of a bird feeder, then I’m good.
I’m not fully sure of the difference between being a birder and birdwatcher, but from what I’ve heard, I’m more of a birdwatcher.
I am a birder!
I am always travelling trying to get my life list up.
I also have banded Birds, so I am also an ornithologist.
Cool!
I am a birder. I can identify the majority of the birds in the U.S., I have way too many field guides, and I travel to see birds (but not as often as I’d like because of school).
Well, since I seem to photograph most of my birds when there aren’t any dragonflies, I consider myself to be more casual …even if I am currently obsessing over Snow / Ross’s Geese and Waxwings.
(I screwed up my wrist late last week; it’s getting better, but between that and the weather here—cold and snowy—I haven’t been out in the field, and I’m getting kind of stir-crazy.)
What’s the difference?
Birders are people who are always travelling to see rare birds, and try to get their life list up. Whereas birdwatchers are more casual, not someone who would chase after rarities, birdwatchers usually just bird in their area.
I hope that makes sense.
Yeah pretty much what @caterpillar511 said. Here’s my definition: “Birdwatcher” is a random person who likes to look at birds from the back porch. Only likes to take a random picture of a Northern Cardinal here and there. Sips coffee while standing outside on a 60°F morning watching a Eastern Bluebird take a bath in the mud puddle. The “Birdwatcher” never actually goes and looks for many different bird species such as rare birds. Overall the “Birdwatcher” doesn’t really dive deep into the world of birds.
The Birder: The “Birder” is the one who takes birds seriously. The “Birder” actively goes out seeking to find new bird species such as rare birds. The “Birder” is always wanting to learn as much as possible about the birds such as bird behaviors or calls and songs that they make.
Hopefully what me and @caterpillar511 said helps
.
Hopefully this makes it more clear

Thank you! That makes more sense. I am still probably the birdwatcher although my interest in birds is growing rapidly.
I’m probably a birdwatcher. As a kid who can’t really drive a car to every bird watching destination I dream of, I’m mostly limited to my area. Luckily it’s filled with birds. However I do try to visit nearby bird watching spots when my schedule allows it. But hopefully I’ll be able to become a birder in the near future.
What you just called birders might refer to twitchers?
Seems like I’m a birder lol.
I think I’m a birder, only, I don’t travel. I go out places for heaps of other stuff nearly everyday, but I just see the normal Cockatoos, (Sulphur-crested, Little Corellas, Galahs) Australian Magpies, Little Ravens, and sometimes a Laughing Kookaburra, and then I’m like, I wish I could get a photo right now! So, not many new rare birds where I am. When I went to Canberra I saw heaps of awesome birds I haven’t seen before.
Question of the Day
Have you participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count before? The Great Backyard Bird Count is Feb 14-17th

Yes, I have before. I am going out this Saturday to do some birding for the GBBC.
