Birding/Birdwatching Discussion Topic

I have recently been interested in bobolink conservation. For those interested in learning more here is a link https://www.bobolinkproject.com/farmers.php. I saw some bobolinks the last few days and thought of how their nesting sites are often hayfields.

Since there was no bird of the week how about I make a poll? What bird behavior should we try to see this week. Poll ends Tuesday 10:00 pm EST time and people have until next Tuesday same time to find this behavior in any bird species.

  • Nest material carrying
  • chasing of same or different species
  • preening or bathing

Forum curators, am I allowed to have links to outside sources?

I would’ve done ā€œpreening or bathingā€ but I can cheat on that as I own my own bird. While I’m writing this he’s sitting on my arm preening. :joy:

Yeah, I forgot to make one again. Thank you very much! Also great poll you just started. That’ll get some good bird behavior discussion started.

Yeah, I thought it could be fun to try and find a bird doing something. I enjoy watching their behavior.

I absolutely love watching little birds chase bigger birds, and I have no idea why. I often see blue jays and red-winged blackbirds chasijg hawks or crows. They’re kind of little jerks, but I like watching it anyway.

This sort of counts, I guess? A Prothonotary Warbler chasing off a female Painted Bunting that wants to land on ā€œHisā€ branch.

I literally own a million birdpools that are used daily. So if that option wins, I’m gonna finally finish a bird of the week challenge!

That definitely counts! Incredibly photo! I have never seen a prothonotary warbler.

What camera do you use? This is mid motion. Awesome!

You can just decide not to include a captive bird.

One of my favorite things I’ve seen in my backyard was a little hummingbird chasing a Merlin! It was super cool, and I find it both funny and adorable how tough those little birds are!

I use a Canon R7 with Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM telephoto zoom lens.

Thank you. I am trying to decide on Cannon or Nikon for getting birds in motion but that is a little off topic from this forum.

I created a forum for camera advice if anyone has input.

I’m sure either would be an excellent choice. The main thing is, learn how to use it to its full capabilities, and practice a lot.
