Cannot open many species and infraspecies from the Taxonomy tab

Platform: Desktop

Browser, if a website issue: Chrome

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/157555-Helodium

https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/157560-Helodium-blandovii

Description of problem: I am unable to open the About page for Helodium blandovii from the Taxonomy tab for Helodium. I am also unable to open the About pages for any of the varieties of Helodium blandovii from the About page for Helodium blandovii. All other pages work fine (as best I can tell), including Helodium paludosum. I also tested this with the same result on the browser version on Google for Android and Safari on iPhone. It is possible to open the page for Helodium blandovii and all its varieties on the Android app.

Step 1: Open https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/157555-Helodium or https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/157560-Helodium-blandovii

Step 2: Navigate to Taxonomy tab.

Step 3: Click on Helodium blandovii or Helodium blandovii varieties, respectively.

Step 4: About pages for clicked taxon do not open.

Unrelated note: the correct orthographic variant of Helodium blandovii is as written. I was in the middle of changing to this from Helodium blandowii when I found this bug. It does not appear to be related to the name change, and was present before it (I was hoping changing the name would force a re-index and fix it, but it did not). The varieties still need to be swapped to fix the species epithet.

the error returned from the API is:
{"status":"500","errors":[{"errorCode":"500","message":"Invalid response for status code 200: results/0/conservation_statuses/0/place/name: must be string"}]}

seems like it could be related to this:

if so, it seems like something that could be fixed by fixing the data, but it probably should be handled more gracefully on the page, too. it may be worth holding off on any attempted data fixes to let iNat developers have a chance to debug the issue.

Thanks, taking a look.

Encountered this again today on Rhyothemis variegata and its subspecies.

Nevermind, this seems to now be affecting a huge number of taxa across Kingdoms. Odonata seems to be quite affected, clicking randomly through the taxonomy there are hardly any species I can open. This is also affecting Asimina, Liriodendron, Persicaria… basically any genus I test.

Interestingly, it seems like opening the taxon with Ctrl+left click works for affected taxa, but left click and Shift+left click do not work.

I’ve edited the title to reflect the current state of this bug.

Platform: Website

Browser, if a website issue: Microsoft Edge

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: Scoters (Genus Melanitta) · iNaturalist

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem:

Links to some taxonomy in the hierarchy do not appear to be working. For example, if I could to Scoters (Melanitta) page, I can click and assess taxa higher like family, order, etc, but clicking the species aren’t working. I can click on White-winged Scoter a dozen times, and it doesn’t register on the browser. On other taxon pages, it’s opposite and I can only access lower-level taxa, or none at all. If I type in the name in the search bar, I can access the taxon page.

Can replicate. I never had this before though. Not sure how common it is.
I cannot access any species from the link you gave either.

The on-click error in edge:

Uncaught (in promise) Error: Internal Server Error
react-main-webpack-2…3ee7c5215502a7.js:9
at value (react-main-webpack-2…5215502a7.js:9:1003)

no issue here, on firefox

A temporary workaround seems to be Ctrl+Left clicking, which opens a new tab but does seem to be able to open these bugged nodes. For curators, it’s also possible to click the edit button on a lower node and then “Back to viewing ____” on the taxon edit page, as well.

Thanks for reporting. This was the result of a bug in some code deployed this week. A fix was just released. Hopefully those links are working as expected again

Moved the above posts to this existing Bug Report to keep discussion in one place.

The widespread inability to open species that appeared yesterday seems to be fixed, but the original taxon that couldn’t be opened that I reported above (Helodium blandovii) is still bugged.

That seems to be related to a data problem which I may have just resolved. Are those links working for you now?
