I read that you can add common names to taxons on the taxonomy page of a taxon. However, I can’t seem to find the button to do that. Is the information that regular users can add names out of date or is the way of doing that just very sneaky?
For reference, I use the Finnish node of iNat (inaturalist.laji.fi) but there was no difference when I logged on the international version either.
On that tab, there’s an indented list going all the way from Animalia to Pecari tajacu, followed by a list of subspecies.
Below that are “Nombres” (Names) with a list of names of the species in various languages. To the right of “Nombres” is “+ Agregar un nombre” (Add a name). I think you click on that.
Make sure to select “show by default” (or whatever the wording is), otherwise you’ll enter it crossed out. That doesn’t mean it’s the first name that shows up; I think a curator has to select that. Also you have to put some text in the reason (or whatever) field; I put a link to Wiktionary.
I entered “quenk”, which is what the peccary is called in Trinidad.
If it is like other parts of the website, you might need an account 30 days old, a verified email, and 50 verifiable observations. So if you just add 6 more observations that might do it.
But yes it would be nice for that to be clearly stated somewhere, as I think it is a newish policy.
To be clear, you will be able to add common names which have been published or listed elsewhere in the literature. Common names should not be invented on iNaturalist.
