Can't post sounds as observations?

I also hate that we can’t independently post a sound clip as an observation in and of itself. I’m standing here right now and can identify a great kiskadee, a northern cardinal, a mocking bird, a couch’s kingbird, a black phoebe, an Audibon’s oriole, a lark sparrow, red wing blackbird, great tail grackle, Eurasian collared dove, Inca dove, morning dove, groove bilked Ani, common yellowthroat, house sparrow, dickissiel, golden fronted woodpecker and green Jay. I can see them in most cases but as stated elsewhere my good camera is charging and my phone definitely can’t do the job as well as getting a bird to pose is pretty tough. In about 30-45 minutes I’ll hear a great horned owl and its mate answering. When American kestrels, red shouldered hawks, created caracaras, red tail hawks, northern harrier, common and lesser nighthawk (which just kicked I ), broad tailed hawk, Merlin’s, and even Turkey and black vulture fly overhead it’s nearly impossible to get proof quickly and clearly but if I’m recording I can get their calls and songs. I can hear the toads and frogs locusts and crickets…birds aren’t alone in this observation category. I can hear the rattle snakes. These are all unique sounds and identifiers. To be able to report these would be wonderful. I live directly in the migration route to Mexico and South America and feel this information is valid and even vital for a full picture of what’s here.

Sounds can be posted as observations - see https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000169939-how-do-i-add-sounds-

Like bouteloua said, you can actually upload just sound bites as an observation. Annoyingly though, and I think what you’re getting at, is that when creating a new observation from within the iNat app, you can only take photos, you can’t record audio natively from the app.

The best solution I have for this is using Merlin to record a song. I hit save, and then, after saving, I click the share button. On android, that button allows me to “share” to another app, and iNat is an option. This will automatically create a new observation with just that audio file

You can record sounds in Android, iOS, and iOS Classic.

You may want to change the “Default observation action” in your app to “Show options” if it’s not set to that already:

And by doing that, you will see this (sorry for android screenshot):

There are almost 1.2 million iNaturalist observations with only sounds: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?photos=false&sounds=true

And at the time of writing, more than 1,193,477 sound only posts.

Also can we add sounds AND photos or just one?

Observations can contain both images and sound files, eg https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/263284560
