Add import via sharing options for sounds

I sometimes use apps like Merlin or Birdnet to record and ID sounds (of birds). Both apps (and I guess others) have a share button to share my recordings with other apps. iNat does not appear in the list of apps that would accept such a sound file.

I would appreciate to have an option to share those recordings with iNat with date and location.

For the moment I have to do it twice: record the sound in iNat and (maybe) record it in one of the others (if the bird and I am give me enough).

The best way I’ve found to upload a Merlin recording using just my iPhone is to:

  • save the recording to Files
  • in the app, create an observation with no evidence, setting the rest of the metadata (time, location, etc)
  • open the newly added observation in a mobile browser and add the recording from Files

You could skip the using the app entirely and create the observation in the mobile browser as well, but using the map can be pretty wonky.

It would be nice if we could upload from Files, rather than just Photos, in the app itself.

We’d definitely like to support sharing sounds into the app in iOS, and we’d like to support importing sound files from the file system. We’re pretty sure we can do the former, less sure about the latter but we’ll look into it. We haven’t discussed priority but my guess is that it may not make it into our “hard launch” goal for this Spring.
