Color map pinpoints differently based on iconic taxon type

Platform: IOs iPhone 12 Pro and iPad 11 Pro 2025

App version number: 0.59.13 (156), and earlier versions as well

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: on app all locations

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

- on map view all observations colored the same regardless of life category
- grid view shows organisms from different categories of life
- same area as shown on iNat website

Description of problem:

On the website and in the original iNat app when zoomed in observations are colored differently depending on what category of life they fall into (eg. plants, vertebrates, insects, etc). This is useful in quickly sorting observations and seeing what is in an area.

However, on the iNat Next interface all observations are colored the same, making it impossible to quickly sort or distinguish them.

Step 1: open iNat Next

Step 2: go to Explore and select an area

Step 3: switch to map view and zoom in until red squares turn to individual drop style markers (an second periodic bug is that sometimes no matter how far zoomed in it stays red squares, but that’s kind of at random)

(I moved this to iNat Next bug reports)

It’s not a bug, it’s intentional. Do you want me to move this to iNaturalist Next Discussion?

What is the reason for abandoning the colour-code? Or is it just a temporary thing that will get added later?

I really like it (and I think we need more colours, rather than less!)

It can be moved if you think that’s a more appropriate place.

If this is intentional, then a feature request is in order as the color differentiation is a very useful aspect of how observations are displayed. I think it’s a mistake to abandon that and display all observations as the same color.
