Common name changes

Using Android phone to access the iNaturalist website, not via the app.

The common name changes from Small White, in explore mode to Cabbage White when individual observation is viewed. Just odd.

Are you prioritizing names from North America or the United States? Cabbage white is set to the common name for those regions, but small white is the default name. Not sure why those would be displaying differently in different places though.

I’m not prioritizing either common name - just using explore to view my observations from a particular park when I noticed one common name in Grid view and another when that individual observation is selected.

I really don’t care which common name is used, but there seems to be a disconnect here. I just thought this might be something worth looking into. I don’t recall ever seeing this before.

I’m not looking for a solution - just a heads up.

Hmmm… more than one Cabbage White. This problem doesn’t occur when the Large White is selected - both Large White in grid and individually.

Check your settings for common names - maybe one display uses the default (which you didn’t set) and …

I was going to do as you suggested, but then I realized I wasn’t logged in, so… the default common name was displayed in the search results, but the regional common name (not default) is displayed when looking at individual observations. I didn’t realize that.

Once logged in - I see regional common names in both cases.

I will often do searches etc without logging in, never occurred to me that the displayed results might be different (should have, but.. )

Now I know.

Off topic - interested to see that tiwane’s own default is to common names. It certainly helps for homonyms - Euclea - moth or shrub? Or for placeholders with tiny typos.
