I went to belango state forest today and noticed a lack of mycorrhizal mushrooms all there were quite a few saprophytics including rustgills, polypores, ghost mushrooms, and an unidentified clavarioid growing on fallen wood .
According to Wikipedia, Belanger State Forest in Australia is a pine plantation with native trees only at it’s edges. I don’t know anything about Australian fungi, but pines are not native to Australia. Most mycorrhizal fungi are specialized to specific taxa of trees. Presumably the native mychorrhizal fungi do not partner with alien pines, and the alien fungi able to form mycorrhizal relationships with pines have not made it to Australia.
