Ghost Wolves of Galveston Island

I would like to add a taxon for the “Ghost Wolves” of Galveston Island. They are primarily a mix between Canis latrans and Canis Rufus, though, other canids are in the DNA mix. A proposed binomial name of Canis spiritus is proposed by the Gulf Coast Canine Project. I’d be perfectly happy with a Canis latrans x rufus designation, though this could apply to many coyotes within the former red wolf range. Let’s discuss, because these wolves are clearly distinct from Canis latrans. Their proportions and coloration are distinct from both the Western and Eastern coyote species.

It appears that this hybrid was already discussed in 2020 on this taxon flag, and the consensus was not to add it. You might consider reopening the discussion there. It was cool to see some of the purported hybrids observations!

I have an observation made at the Audubon location on the west side of Galveston Island that I believe falls into this category. The canid looks very different from the ones I see often where I live in Willis, TX. Observation is here… https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/329024688
