Gummosis, a plant disease

I don’t see a listing for gummosis, a plant disease. I observed it on a cherry tree, however, it occurs on other trees or plants. If it’s listed only under the host plant, how can one search for other listings? Should there be a separate listing for this disease?

Hi @sdz456. Apparently, gummosis is the symptom, and the cause can be “environmental stress, mechanical injury, or disease and insect infestation”.

As to a pathogen, “Cytospora canker is caused by two species of fungi, Leucocytospora cincta and Leucocytospora leucostoma” iNat’s taxonomy appears to list these as Cytospora cincta and Cytospora leucostoma, so there are taxa available to use if you have an observation of the disease. Unless you know for sure which species is involved, you would probably need to ID at the genus level.

If you come across a good treatment, let me know, as my apricot tree would be happy.

“Gummosis” itself is not a taxon, but instead more of a phenomenon that can happen for a variety of reasons.

If you would like to search for observations of plants showing gummosis, consider creating a traditional project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/new_traditional

Hi @sdz456, whenever you have a question about a taxon missing in iNaturalist, please flag its parent taxon on iNaturalist for curation to get the attention of curators.

Here on the iNaturalist Forum, the Curators category is for Curators to initiate discussions related to curation on iNaturalist. Topics in this category are supposed to be started by Curators only. So I’m going to go ahead and close this topic.
