Has the map changed colour?

This is a quick and unimportant topic…
I could swear the ocean on the map has just changed in colour and became slightly more green, but I don’t know whether I’m just imagining things?

Which map?

The map view under “Explore”

My default is set to satellite imagery and to me, it does not look any different than usual.

yes, the whole basemap appears to have changed styles. here’s what it is now:

here’s what it used to be:

Google probably just changed their default basemap style, as they do periodically.

I, for one, welcome our new cyanobacteria overlords!

We’re going to see if we can revert back to the original colors, but it may not be possible. And it’s not a big deal, as @eyekosaeder said.

nobody asked, but i prefer the new style.

quick poll:

  • i like the new style
  • i like the old style

And just like that, the beastie boys are now in my head, even though I like the old style.

I think I’m a few years older than @tiwane, but I want to explain his pop culture references, because many of you are older or younger, and you may not appreciate his playfulness today. I will tie Tony’s references into iNat:

  • This is a reference to a song by a band called The Beastie Boys
  • The song was released in 1986 Nov
  • The song contains references to Malus (apple), as well as to 3 species of the genus Prunus (cherries): Prunus (various cherries), Prunus persica (the peach), and Prunus domestica (the plum)

Thank you for the Beastie Boys explanation!

We already have explainxkcd.com. Do we now need explaintiwane.org?

The oceans are warmer than they used to be, unfortunately, so a color change is appropriate. Maybe it should be yellow, tending towards orange, instead of light blue.

Perhaps we should just colour them brownish to signify all the waste swimming in the water?

boo. as far as i know, oceans still generally appear a shade of blue from space. some sort of blue is fine.

Visible waste is mostly plastic - lots of ‘pretty’ colours

But they should appear like a brown mess if viewed from a distance, right?

I agree. I was just being sarcastic. Haha.
Though what I definitely wouldn’t mind being added to oceans would be a few sea monsters like on old-timey maps. :D
But I guess they’d be out of place too on a more scientific/serious website such as iNat

“If I have to explain it, you wouldn’t understand.”
