Help with duplicate taxa - wiki

If any curators want to help out with a mindless task, these are duplicate taxa within each iconic taxa (which means their probably true duplicates)

e.g. within molluscs
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1206447-Cultellus-maximus
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1206448-Cultellus-maximus

Any help swapping these to reduce duplication would be much appreciated!

I’m willing to help, but it would be good to get to the bottom of this longstanding issue of why the external names importer is creating these duplicates.

I agree, I can make this list in a few days and see if there are any new ones which might help rule out active bugs from old bugs that have gone away

Thanks for the help!

Is at the order level, only site staff can do this one, curators can’t even save a draft.

One evident issue is when the existing taxon record is grafted in the database to a different parent than the EoL source. For example Perigrapha was in the database grafted directly to a family. The EoL imported version is grafted directly to the order, missing the family. The code clearly does not check all through the ancestry for possible duplications (This is a known issue and is getting worse with the inclusion of all the subordinate ranks not in the external sources).

Likewise 1 version of Stenomorpha suavis is grafted to a genus level parent, the older record which was in place when the EoL import was fired off is grafted to a subgenus parent which does not exist in EoL

Did you check today - I coincidentally opened up the base of Chromista (as Viruses and Fungi are) in response to this flag https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/539793

If you still can’t swap that order thats a bug

Yes tried just before posting the above and got an error saying only staff can work at that level

Yes, Margaritidae is a problem that exists within the greater taxonomy:

Margaritidae Blainville, 1824 in the bivalves – The homonymy with Margaritidae Thiele, 1924 (Gastropoda), a name also in current use, needs to be resolved.

This is not something we can do anything about until the professionals fix it in a publication.

Odd jameskm was able to do this https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/95575 - I’ll innvestigate

Thanks Susan - thats a good point. Some of these might be legit duplicates like the one you mentioned (Margaritidae) - I divided it up by iconic taxa to get rid of obvious situations like that (e.g. Iris the mantid and Iris the plant) but there still are a few ‘legit duplicates’ in that list that aren’t actionable

Do we need to swap or would just inactivating work?

swapping is safest, but if you’re sure there’s no ID’s, Obs, or children inactivating is ok

another advantage of swapping is that the input name carries over as a synonym to the output

Sorry, its not clear that edits had been made to the original list by others. I’d added that note at the end of the name after going through the molluscs.
