Multiple ungrafted instances of the same genus are being created, each with one or two species

I’ve noticed a trend in the last few days of multiple instances of the same genus appearing in the ungrafted taxa list, each containing one or a few species.

Any thoughts how this might be happening, and has anyone else noticed this?

Maybe someone’s tried importing the names multiple times? Those are genera from very obscure mollusk classes, so could be the same user. Not sure why something different would come up multiple times though.

Maybe… it’s not just molluscs, though.

Yesterday I cleaned a bunch of beetles that were doing the same, and if you look at the ungrafted taxa list (at the bottom of the curation page), there are many more examples I haven’t linked to.

It’s possible someone is importing a bunch of species individually, but the way the imports are being processed seems to be that a new instance of the genus is being created each time.

There is an existing bug report for this somewhere. Basically the genus name is also listed as a synonym to a species and it get imported. You should see a struckthrough species name listed under them.

Yeah this to me seems more like a bulk import of Solenogastres and Caudofoveata (for the mollusks at least). So far all species have been accounted for between the duplicated genera with no duplicate species which is interesting. There’s a lot of ungrafted names to go through though.

No, these seem to all have a descendant species, and I cannot see a struck-through synonym.

I’ve also noticed the multiple imports, not limited to genera and sometimes duplicated under the parent too. Looking at some of the more recently created taxa with the API, this is happening frequently:
