How do I apply to create apps?

Goal of the tool: Automatically create some observations.

Niche it fills in the iNaturalist ecosystem: Smooth workflow.

Is there a commercial component, or do you plan into include one in the future? Are donations requested? (yes/no, explain): No, my web app is free.

What sort of data (if any) does your app collect from its users?: (see below)

Description: I have written a web app for vegetation surveys, and users are already manually copying some data to iNat. I would like to automate that, to save time.

Discussion questions or areas seeking feedback:

On the page:

https://www.inaturalist.org/oauth/app_owner_application

It says to submit an application to become an “app owner”, but it does not say how to do that.

I have written a webapp “VegNab”, mostly for my own use, but other field botanists are beginning to use it. It’s for mobile entry of vegetation survey data, efficiently and spell-checked.

Users typically know most of the species, but VegNab has a “placeholder” feature, for when a species is not known on-site. Data entry can go ahead, and the placeholder will be identified later.

Users are already putting these placeholders on iNat, for documentation and collaboration, as well as for iNat community ID. But it’s a duplication of effort. The internal form of a placeholder in VegNab closely corresponds to an iNat observation: digital photos, and some notes. A user has to repeat what he/she already did in VegNab to create the iNat observation.

I envision putting a “sync” function in VegNab which will create iNat observations from all a user’s placeholders. I have looked into how to do this: PKCE login, avoid creating duplicates, etc. VegNab would remember the iNat observation, and integrate it into the user’s known species data.

To try VegNab, if not on a phone, best to paste the following URL into an incognito tab of a desktop browser, the window set narrow to emulate a phone screen.

On a phone, reload twice, to assure the cache is set. Then, it will work completely offline.

As stated in the application you link to:

In order to submit an application your account must be at least 2 months old and must have made at least 10 improving identifications for other users in the last month.

Maybe you can’t see that? Have you made 10 improving IDs for other users in the last month? If so, then I think you should see this:

I filled out this section, and my topic was closed in 2 days with a message that said I should see an “Apply” box when I go to this page:

https://www.inaturalist.org/oauth/app_owner_application

There is no “Apply” box when I go to that page. I am logged in to my account when I go there. The message said, as I already knew, that my account needed to be at least 2 months old, and I had to have made 10 improving IDs for other users in the last month. I have been a member since 2016. The dashboard says I have made 36 IDs. Do they need to be more than a month old?

do you meet this requirement?

Aside from the application, you may want to review iNaturalist’s position on machine generated content: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/machine_generated_content

Did you click on the “improving identifications” link? It will take you to this page, which defines an improving ID. As @pisum notes, you have not met that requirement yet. I currently count 9 improving IDs for others in the last month.

My proposal is acceptable, according to the position. The data are all human generated. Only the upload is automated.

Once you are able to apply to be an app owner, we’ll evaluate your proposal in the application you send to us.

Thanks for the query. Until seeing that tool, I had no way to know how many “improving” IDs I had.
